Phil Collins - Chairman
Phil started fabricating and erecting steel framed buildings back in 1973 after building his own house then an extension to a workshop for the original business which was a tractor and agricultural machinery partnership – Collins and Payne, formed in 1967.It developed mostly with agricultural buildings then some light industrial. As things progressed Farm Trailers were designed and built then Collins Engineering was formed in 1987, separating it from the original Herbert Collins and Sons, leaving John to run the agricultural trading business. In the 80’s a Motorsport business was formed, centring on Phil’s own rallying hobby and career and eventually a contract was signed with Toyota for Collins Motorsport to run the Toyota Rally team which went on to dominate the British Rally Championship at that time. Work followed in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East which was a rich vein of learning and experience.
At about that time the Farm Trailer business was sold and soon after it was decided to close the Motorsport department and concentrate on Construction and Property development, culminating in the purchase of the Old Tileworks at Whitestone, the development of this into Industrial Units and then the purchase of the old Thorn Lighting site at Rotherwas.
The diversion into residential was made when the Victoria Eye Hospital came on the market and we converted it into a mixture of apartments and houses. These were all very well received and further sites were developed including Longtown and Little Dewchurch. Just over 4 years ago Phil decided that with ever advancing years it was time to let somebody else share the strain so sold ¾ of the business to Julian Evans, Nick Morgan and Mark Preddy, all of whom have been working in the company around 20 years. We are now expanding the whole business, but in particular the residential side with the employment of Russell Pryce who used to be a Hereford planning officer and are looking for opportunities to work with other land owners.
Julian Evans - Financial Director
Julian joined the company in 1988 and with his farming background quickly developed a knowledge of the costs and the construction methods involved in the steel framed building business. His experience has grown with the business changes and developed a very complete understanding of all the many components which make up a modern factory, warehouse or office block. He is able to understand the needs of the customer and make early judgements with regard to budget prices and sensible, cost effective methods of construction. He is also able to produce cash flow projections for funders and will monitor monthly valuations, changes to the specification etc.
Nick Morgan - Technical Director
Nicks career started in 1987 when he worked for Monmouthshire County Council as a Junior Architectural Technician, working on sheltered housing projects. 18 months later he moved to a private architectural practice in Abergavenny where he stayed for 10 years eventually becoming an Associate to the company working on a vast array of projects including housing developments, care homes for the elderly, commercial buildings and shop refurbishments. In 1999, Nick joined Collins Design and Build Ltd, assisting in the design and working drawings associated with the industrial and commercial buildings and taking a lead role in project management. Nick also took on the role of steel detailing of the larger industrial/commercial buildings therefore growing a wide range of knowledge within the industry. In recent years the design department has grown and now employs four more designers and technicians all working under Nicks supervision.
Mark Preddy - Managing Director
Mark has been with us for over 18 years and has progressed through the ranks from site worker to Site Manager and has overseen some of our most prestigious and complex projects. Mark has a great knowledge of the business, materials, building suppliers, sub-contractors and Building Regulations. Amongst his projects we would list the refurbishment of Thorn Business Park, Beacon Business Park, Victoria Eye Hospital, New concentrate store, warehouse, canning line and road infrastructure for UBL/Heineken at Ledbury and 10 houses at Little Dewchurch.
No matter what has gone into a project before the work starts on site, it is the speed, efficiency and quality of the work that any construction company is measured by. Mark has the talent, knowledge and personality to make these very important elements gel into a well organised, safe and efficient site developing towards the finished project and another satisfied client.
